The
Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (R&ER) terminus lies adjacent to the National Rail
station. The former Furness Railway stone-built goods shed is now
used by the R&ER as a workshop. From
Ravenglass the R&ER line turns eastward and descends past marshland alongside
the River Mite. The first station is at Muncaster Mill, from where
the line begins to climb steeply through Mill Wood and alongside the
northern edge of Muncaster Fell. At Miteside there is a small halt
followed by a passing loop. The line passes the remains of former
granite quarry sidings at Murthwaite before rounding a bluff known as Rock
Point, high above the River Mite. The line turns into the valley and
drops steeply to Irton Road station, and the second passing loop. From
Irton road the route follows a large reverse curve to reach Eskdale Green
station. A steep climb follows along the side of the valley to
Fisherground station and passing loop. There is also a lineside water tank
at Fisherground. From here to Beckfoot the line is twists along the
fellside passing former granite quarries. Today the line bends sharply to
the south to reach Dalegarth in Eskdale. The trackbed of the former
route to the village of Boot is clearly visible today. |
